I don't know why I just forced myself to re-read the contents of godhatesamerica.com and others associated with it. I suppose I could tell myself it is an attempt to understand the 'enemy', or to add fuel to the fire of my anger against people like that, and organisations like that. But really I'm just left feeling heart-weary and sick to the marrow with wondering how a person can call themselves Christian and yet seek to misuse "God's word"* in this horrific way.
I want to able to laugh at it. The only thing I could find funny and non-threatening was the overwhelmingly petty response to the Swedish royal family here: "The King looks like an anal-copulator, & his grinning kids look slutty & gay!" Statements like that allow me to assume this is only a twelve-year-old boy acting out. But then, "You are drippings from the Devil's own penis - a veritable sperm bank for Satan's queers" is so hateful I can't maintain the pretence.
And the rest is just poison. Suggesting that teaching 'God loves everyone' is somehow associated with the devil. Urging to pray that more people will die so that they will go to hell. Thanking God for the deaths in Katrina and Tsunami ("Pray for more dead bodies floating on the fag-semen-rancid waters of New Orleans.") "THANK GOD FOR ALL DEAD SWEDES!!!". The blaming of September 11 and the deaths in Iraq on 'fags and dykes'. It's all horrible, and the worst is that people like this actually exists, and are alowed to reproduce and indoctrinate innocent children into this hatred.
And the scariest thing of all is my own succeptability to believe everything I read. I think there really are wizards living in secret all around Britain. Fairies populate the long grass in my garden. I try to communicate telepathically with my pets. I think it's cool to be uncool. And reading this sort of thing, I wonder, am I uncofortable because this is a violation of God's love? Or is it that I can't face the truth?
You see, Hell is a very useful tool of persuasion. It tickles upon people's fears of death, pushes them to the edge. Everyone wants to live forever in some way - nobody can face the idea of their conciousness, that they've worked hard on, nurturing and getting to understand and building memories with, just blinking out of existence. And you begin to feel that if you accept the idea of heaven, you're only accepting half of 'the truth'. And that's when people like this get you. Because Hell is not a fire-pit of an afterlife - it's a mind-altering drug. And like all dengerous drugs, it should be banned.
* Yeah, I'm not sure the bible can be blamed on God. It was written by a bunch of men in a patriarchal society - and the new testament was put together hundreds of years after the big J's death. But I don't deny that the bible makes a wonderful story, with some nice morals strung along in there.
